Today’s customers use Google, Yahoo, Bing, Yellow Pages, Super Pages, Yellow Book, Yelp, Angie’s List, Facebook and Twitter…to name a few. The best news for small business is they’re all free. Yes, even the basic Super Pages and the Yellow Book listings.

But let’s take it one step further. According to a recent consumer behavior study by Optify, 60% of users click on the information “above the fold” or the first thing they see on screen without scrolling down the page. Another 29% click on the first page. Optify concluded “if you double your investment to move from the second position to the first, you could triple your visits for that keyword.” That means; if you’re the top listing, where ever your customers are searching, you are guaranteed business!

Optify’s study focused on Google search data but the same behaviors would undoubtedly carry over to other search sites as well.

#2 – Keywords rule!

Customers find you by searching one or two words or a short phrase. The more terms and phrases that match, the more exposure you’ll have in the search engines and local directories.

For example: Customer’s for a Plumber in Orlando might find him by searching for “Orlando plumber” or “plumber in orlando” or “water heater installation in Orlando” or “leaking water heater repair Orlando” or  “best plumber in Orlando” or any combination. You must anticipate and analyze what you’re customers are searching and focus your internet advertising on those keywords. The terms must appear on your website in several places and as directory categories to have any impact.

#3 – Make the search engines happy

Search any term and you’ll find tens if not hundreds of thousands of results. How do the search engines determine who to rank #1 and #100,000? They use a complicated algorithm which factors in the information on your site, the density of the search term on your web pages, if the search term is in the title, the url, a tag, and a “header”, your online activity and links on other sites that point to your site. It’s actually a little more complicated but that’s the condensed explanation.

Today’s search engines obtain information from every other search engine, social media site, blog, website and directory. And directories use information from certain search engines and other directories. Google uses verified account information on Yahoo to help rank search results and vice a versa.

The more verified listings and links you have in several search engines and directories, the better you’ll rank. Equally important is to exact match categories, addresses, phone numbers and web addresses. Search engines use this information to verify that they have the most up-to-date relevant information to present to their customer, the searcher.

#4 – Create internet buzz with great content and visitor interaction

While this may sound intimidating, it really isn’t. But, it can be time consuming for local small businesses.

We’ve already established that the search engines are watching everything that happens on the net. Now it’s time to give them more of you and what you do.

Search engines like to see activity on your website as well as other sites talking about you. That could be as simple as an active Facebook page, a few youtube videos, maybe write a short article or press release and post it in an article directory or blog.

Put your web address on everything you do and every profile you have; Facebook, Twitter, espn or Oxygen, it doesn’t matter. When you make a comment on someone’s blog, enter your web address. If you want more exposure and better rankings, write an article for someone’s blog or article directory and link back to your site. The key here is that everything you do should have a link back to your website.

While it was a great improvement in search rankings, he still wasn’t getting any business. Why? Because 89% of customer’s never get past the 1st page of search results.

I redesigned the customer’s site and included links to FB, Google maps, Twitter and BBB. I included a blog so he could write articles about the most common questions he hears everyday. The customer videotaped a brief introduction, uploaded it to youtube and I included it on his site. He took 6 pictures which I used on his site and also in all his directory profiles.

I registered his site in Google Places, Yahoo Local, Bing Maps, Yelp and a dozen other consumer directories.

The customer wrote 4 simple 500 word articles about brakes, towing a boat, wheel alignments and oil changes. I posted them to his blog and included specific search engine keywords in the url, headers and tags. I then took those articles and used them as the base article and created 10 additional unique articles  of each one using an article spinner. Then posted those articles to a several article directories, google blogger, tumblr, Squidoo, etc.

This was in the first 30 days.

Then something amazing (to him) happened; he started getting new customers who found him on the internet. In the first 30 days, he had more internet business than in the preceeding 4 years!

Since then Wise Auto has been generating an extra  $500 – $1500 a month from his website. He pays $199 a month.

We aren’t  always in the first position of Google for all search terms but we are number #1, #2 or #3 for 10 primary keywords and on the first page for 14 more. For one, Smartphone penetration is now at 48% of all cell phone users. That’s significant considering 2 years ago it was 22%. In fact in the last 3 months, 69% of all cell phone purchases were smartphones!

The next chart breaks down the age groups into income classes. This is where you can get a good sense of where smartphone usage is really going when you look at the 18-34 year old demographic. 56% of 18-24 year old’s with an income of less than $15,000 and 43% of 24-34 year old’s in the same income bracket own a smartphone with it’s expensive data packages.

By comparison only 18% or less of age brackets over 45 year old’s, making less than $15k, feel the need to take on the extra expense. A shocking revelation in budgeting priorities, if you ask me.

What Does That Mean for Businesses Planning a Mobile Strategy?

Looking at the chart, all age and income brackets above $75K have excellent smart phone penetration. It shouldn’t be too hard determine that you should have a mobile website if you’re serving the public. Large business will want to take it one step further and consider developing their own app if they sell high end products.

Another demographic that’s ripe for smart phone marketing is the 18-24 demographic. There’s such high penetration that any business who markets to that demographic should not ignore the trends.
